Y-Combinator alum CloudMedx acquired Gyrus Labs on Wednesday for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition includes the Gyrus Labs team and the company’s IP and data rights.

Dongyang Zhang, formerly on the core team that created IBM Watson for health, co-founded the Bay Area-based Gyrus Labs in 2014 to bring machine learning and neuroscience theory together to improve medical data analysis. He will assume the role of Senior Medical Scientist at CloudMedx.

"Dr. Zhang and Gyrus Labs share our passion for bringing a comprehensive and adaptive analytics engine to all healthcare providers to improve patient care," CloudMedx CEO Tashfeen Suleman said in a press release. "The addition of their breakthrough analytics engine and unmatched expertise in medical data science will further extend the value we are delivering to healthcare organizations nationwide."

Suleman co-founded Palo Alto-based CloudMedx in 2014 as a health analytics company that uses Big Data to generate real-time health insights and improve patient outcomes. The company, which was part of Y-Combinator’s 2015 Winter class, has raised $6.6 million to date from backers such as Data Collective, AME Cloud Ventures, FundersClub, Tencent Holdings and Lux Capital, among others.

CloudMedx points out that a significant number of patients’ medical charts hide information that can be useful and sometimes crucial at the point of care. The company has already integrated the Gyrus Labs technology into the CloudMedx platform to enhance its speed and performance. The platform aims to help physicians make informed decisions, improve patient care and reduce medical costs.
